How to Get the Right Care for Your Loved One with Alzheimer's

If you have a loved one suffering from Alzheimer's disease, you want to give the best care possible. But do you know what that is? Or how to get it?

Here are some questions that people in your position often ask. The answers may help you find the right care for your loved one.

What do I do if I think my loved one has Alzheimer's disease?

  • Learn the warning signs of the disease. (Healthcare Center Name) has a booklet describing the symptoms to look for.
  • Have your loved one examined by a doctor who is experienced with Alzheimer's. (Name) can help you set up the appointment.
  • With your doctor, plan your loved one's care.

What kind of care is available?

  • Different kinds of help are available to suit the person's condition and the family situation. For example, organizations such as (Name) offer a number of options:
    - Training for the patient in coping with the bodily and mental changes he or she is going through.
    - Training for the caregiver on how best to help the Alzheimer's sufferer.
    - At-home assistance from a nurse, social worker, or professional attendant.
    - An adult day care center just for Alzheimer's patients. There your loved one can talk with people, take part in recreational activities, and keep the mind and body active. (Name) has programs during the day, evening, and weekends.
    - Residence care and hospice facilities, if your loved one needs full-time care with basic bodily needs.
    - Professional assistance in monitoring the person's condition and suggesting changes in care over time.

Will my loved one have to go to a nursing home?

  • No, not necessarily. With the proper care, many people in the early stages of Alzheimer's can live at home. Your doctor can advise you about that decision. Organizations like (Name) can help a person function at home by training the family caregiver. (Name) can also send professionals to give medicine, check blood pressure, administer injections, and assist in other ways at home.
